Ka Leo meetings
I have been attending the Ka Leo O Kaua‘i meetings for the Kapahi/Kapaa/Keapana/Kealia area for over a year and a half. Brian Baptiste promoted these once a month meetings in our different communities as a democratic way for residents to first identify problems and then to work on solutions.
I would like to mention a few of the positive results that have emerged from our group.
Some members of our group as well as the Hanalei group were concerned about the roadside spraying, and the spraying in parks, of pesticides that have detrimental health effects on children and people with chemical sensitivities. Although the project is still in process, some significant improvements have been achieved. Spraying has been eliminated in several parks and some roadside areas. County workers have received additional training in pesticide usage and public notification of spraying through signage on the highways is in place.
The triangle near Kapa‘a Elementary School, Gore Park, has been fenced in because one group member identified it as an unsafe place for kids to play. In addition, members in our group worked successfully to get a county commitment for a new bike path from Kapa‘a Elementary that will join up with phase 3 of the proposed coastal bike path.
My special interest in beach and mountain public accesses led me to work with others in opening up two established accesses in Kapahi that have been gated by lease holders. Has anyone noticed that the huge pot holes at the entrance to Kealia beach parking lot were filled over a month ago? Again, that came out of our group.
Instead of grumbling about things you don’t like in your community, do something about it.

A Wacky Idea – Dump sites
We are overlooking one of nature’s gifts to mankind in order to help us take care of our waste problems – active volcanoes. We were also given good things to use for survival and we would be returning unlimited wastes so that she can help us keep our environment clean and healthy. Volcanoes are natural incinerators that cost nothing to operate – they’ll burn anything to nothing.
Suggestions of packing waste materials for shipment to the mainland is costly— cheaper to ship them to our volcanoes on the Big Island. Wacky but wise, I think.
