The Garden Island newspaper and Zonta Club of Kauai have again teamed up to try to make the holidays brighter for our needy senior citizens, children and families. The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund has been helping Kaua‘i families for over 30 years. Letters are sent to island agencies such as Easter Seals and the Agency on Elderly Affairs seeking referrals of clients who are most in need. Last year, the community’s generous donations helped 153 adults and 140 children. This year, even more requests for assistance have been received. The Christmas Fund volunteers use monetary donations to purchase gift certificates and gift cards that are distributed to families and individuals.
Because of the logistical problems in distributing donated items, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Elderly couple need certificate to purchase Ensure for nutrition
Kaoru and Ayako are 94 and 92 respectively. Kaoru is the caregiver for Ayako who suffered a stroke and is no longer able to do the things that she used to be able to do. Ayako is unable to eat solid food and having a gift certificate to purchase “Ensure” would assist Kaoru and Ayako a great deal.
Grandmother needs help
Grandmother needs help in providing for grandsons.
Mary is the grandmother of Joel (10), John (6) and Melachai (4). The parents of the children abandoned them last year. Since then, Mary has been doing her best to raise the boys on her own. She only receives welfare and food stamps and must provide for them out of her limited means. There’s absolutely no room for extras. A gift of clothing, food, or toys would be greatly appreciated by this little family.
Gift certificate for Sunny
Sunny is a 60-year-old woman who suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease.
She has had two strokes that left her partially immobile. Her vision is also impaired and she has heart problems.
Being on a fixed income, she would greatly appreciate a gift certificate to purchase personal toiletries. This would be a tremendous help for her daily needs.
Donations can be mailed to the Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapa‘a, HI, 96746. For more information, contact Dimples Kano at 822-9882.
