Biggest little town falls by a little
The Division II Championship playoff game was played on O‘ahu at Aloha Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 28; the representatives from Kaua‘i for this game were the Co-Champions Hanapep‘e Colts Midgets.
The game was played at 10 a.m., under cloudy skies, for the kids from the Biggest Little Town, this was the game, for all the marbles. Win this and it’s on to Orlando Florida and Disney World, Mickey Mouse ears and all, the Super Bowl of Pop Warner.
The scoring started with the kids from the Biggest Little Town on Kaua‘i, scoring on a touchdown pass from Allen-Michael Gaspar to Stetson Raposas, 6 yards and the score, the PAT by none other then James Delos-Reyes, was good, (why not he made all the kicks for the Colts in the regular season on Kaua‘i), the score, Hanapepe Colts 8 the Palolo Vikings 0. This score came with 6:40 on the clock in the first quarter of play.
The Hanapepe Colts would strike again, this time with 1:35 on the clock in the first quarter, this score came on a touchdown run by Allen-Michael Gaspar on a 50 yard run where he evaded several tacklers on his way to the end zone, Allen-Michael would leave several would-be tacklers in disbelief, that he had scored. The PAT by James Delos-Reyes was good and the kids from the Biggest Little Town were in the lead and they would now play some tough defense. Score was now Hanapepe Colts 16 and the Palolo Vikings 0.
The Colts would hang on to this lead the rest of the game, for the remaining, three quarters the Colts would fight to keep their lead and the Vikings out of the end zone.
With 32 seconds left on the clock in the second quarter of play, the Palolo Vikings got on the scoreboard with a run by Tolufale Alaifaiva Jr., the PAT failed and the score was now Hanapepe 16 and the Palolo Vikings 6. This score would remain the same until the fourth quarter of play when the Vikings Ikaika Aryers caught the ball on a pass from quarterback Kapono Kaiwi-Barrionuebo for 10 yards and the score, the PAT kick was good, and the score was now Hanapepe 16, Palolo Vikings 14. This second score by the Palolo Vikings came with 2:40 on the clock in the fourth quarter. The Colts lead was being threatened, and the kids from The Biggest Little Town would have to step it up on both defense and offense.
Hanapepe would have to keep the ball out of the Vikings’ hands if they wanted to win this game. The Colts took over the ball with 2:40 in the fourth quarter and they needed to make a first down, the Vikings called time-outs to stop the clock. With less then 1:30 on the clock, Palolo took the ball on a change of possession on the 45 yard line.
After two plays, the Vikings called their last time out. The Vikings had the ball on the 35 yard line and ran a play, the clock ran and was winding down, Palolo Vikings had no more time outs; they threw a pass and the clock stopped with four seconds left in the game, third down, no time outs, this was the last play of the game, stop Palolo and the victory was the Colts, the kids from The Biggest Little Town, would go on to Orlando Florida as the State Division II Champions.
Quarterback, Kapono Kaiwi-Barrionuebo took the snap dropped back to pass and threw the ball up and into the end zone where Rome Soi and the Hanapepe defender jumped for the ball and Rome Soi came down with the ball and the score ending this tough ball game, Palolo Vikings had come from behind to win the Division II play-off game. The kids from The Biggest Little Town had played their all, all eighteen kids gave it their best shot, played their hearts out, but the Palolo Vikings were not to be denied this victory, both teams fought hard through four quarters of football and the victors were the Vikings of Palolo.
The stand outs for the Hanapepe Colts were too many to mention, each and every one of the players deserved a game ball, for they were truly winners in this game. Our Congratulations goes out to Head Coach Glenn Gaspar and his entire coaching for representing Kaua‘i at this game. We Congratulate the Hanapepe Association for their outstanding season, in both the Junior Pee wee and Midget divisions, and let’s not forget the Hanapepe Cheerleaders who will be advancing on to the National Regional Cheer Competition in Orlando next week. Also going on to compete in the Cheer Competition along with Hanapepe will be the Kekaha Squads and the Kapa‘a Cheer Squads; we wish them all the best of luck in the competition, you go girls!
Mokihana Bowl Games JPW: Kapa‘a 6, Kapahulu 0
The first score was on a 15-yard run by Bronson Aiwohi of Kapa‘a, with 3:29 on the clock in the first quarter. The PAT failed, which made the score 6-0 in favor of the Eagles.
The remaining quarters saw both teams attempt to put drives together, but neither team could punch the ball into the endzone. The game was a defensive juggernaut from the start.
The second half was fought between the 50-yard line, with defensive standouts from the Eagles, Brentten Rapozo, Bronson Aiwohi, Keane Agoot, Earl Thronas, Kaulana Kaui, Jakey Alves, and Leevi Bethel. For the Kapahulu Raiders; on defense and offense, Nahoa Spencer, Daniel Hohu, J.T. Campbell, Dalton Gouveia, and Chase Hussey. The game ended with Kapa‘a winning 6-0.
PW: Hilo 19, Kapa‘a 12
The game started with scoring by the visiting team in the first quarter. Score was by Cassius Ford on a 32 yard touchdown pass from quarter back Ezra Cabang, the PAT failed and the score was Hilo Boys & Girls Club-6 and Kapa‘a Eagles (PW)-0.
Our next score came in the first quarter with 29 seconds on the clock on a run by Cassius Ford. Ford went on a 65 yard scamper for the score, point after failed and the score was now Hilo Boys & Girls Club-12 and the Kapa‘a Eagles (PW)-0.
The Kapa‘a Eagles (PW) scored on a 4 yard pass play. Pass from QB Keanu Estenzo to Weston Moniz for the score, the PAT failed and the score was Kapa‘a Eagles (PW)-6, Hilo Boys & Girls Club-12.
Hilo Boys & Girls Club score on a 30 yard interception, intercepting that pass was Delfin Corpuz. The PAT on a run was good and the score was now Kapa‘a Eagles (PW)-6 and the Hilo Boys & Girls Club-19.
The extra point was run in by Cassius Ford of the Boys & Girls Club of Hilo.
A pass play from QB Keanu Estenzo to BJ Aiwohi for 20 yards and the score. The PAT failed and the score was Kapa‘a Eagles (PW)-12 and the Hilo Boys & Girls Club-19.
PW: Koloa 27, Kapahulu 12
First score of the game came with 4:33 on the clock in the first quarter of the game. This score came on a 45 yard run by Torrey Santiago who took off around the left side of the line and scampered in for the score. The PAT failed and the score was now Koloa Rams-6 and the Kapahulu Raiders (PW)-0.
The second half started with defensive plays by both teams. Koloa Westside Rams moved the ball on the ground during this quarter. Defensive plays by Steven Lakalaka of Kapahulu stopped the Rams from putting the score on the board.
Kaulana Waalani-Arroyo of the Koloa Westside Rams scored on a one yard run, this score came with 2:17 on the clock in the third quarter.
The PAT by Ross Ozaki was good and the score was now Koloa Rams-14 and the Kapahulu Raiders-0.
Touchdown by Michael Blackstad of Koloa on a 2 yard run with 2:38 on the clock in the fourth quarter. The PAT was no good score would remain Koloa Rams-20 and Kapahulu Raiders-0.
The Kapahulu Raiders would score with 1:32 on the clock in the fourth quarter, Christopher Fiamate, the PAT failed and the score would be Kapahulu Raiders-6 and the Koloa Rams-20. The next score would come on a 10 yard run by Torrey Santiago of the Koloa Westside Rams, the PAT was good on a run by Mickey Blackstad, the score stood at Koloa Westside Rams-27 and Kapahulu Raiders (PW)-6.
The final score of this game would come with just 10 seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter.
The score would come on a pass play from running back Steve Lakalaka to Duke Bukoski on a 20 yard pass play. Score was now Koloa Westside Rams-27 and the Kapahulu Raiders (PW)-12.
Midgets: Koloa 30, Kapahulu 0
Our fourth and final game of the day for this Mokihana Bowl was between the Koloa Raiders and the Kapahulu Raiders (M).
With 8:28 on the clock in the first quarter, Hilton Delima-Kamai scored on a 3 yard run and the PAT by Koloa failed and the score was Koloa Raiders-6 and the Kapahulu Raiders (M)-0. Delima-Kamai run came on a drive which started on the 45 yard line.
With 4:17 on the clock in the first quarter, Koloa scored on a 10 yard quarter keeper by Tyrus Ceria-Lux. The PAT by Dawson Okinaka was good and the score was now Koloa Raiders-14 and Kapahulu Raiders (M)-0. After an exchange of punts the Kapahulu Raiders (M) managed to move the ball on the ground. At the end of the first quarter the score was still Koloa Raiders-14 and the Kapahulu Raiders (M)-0.
Score by Koloa on a field goal kick by Dawson Okinaka with 1:26 on the clock in the second quarter.
The field goal kick was for 28 yards, kick was good and the score was now Koloa Raiders-17 and the Kapahulu Raiders-0.
After one half of play the score was Kapahulu Raiders (M)-0 and the Koloa Raiders-17.
In the third quarter Koloa Raiders scored with 5:52 on the clock. Dawson Okinaka scored on a 23 yard run, the PAT was good on a run by Kai Jordon and the score was Koloa Raiders-24 and the Kapahulu Raiders (M)-0.
Koloa Raiders would score again, this time on a 22 yard run by Paul Correa who ripped off 22 yards and the score.
The PAT was no good on an end around. From this point on in the game the clock was a running clock. Score was now Koloa Raiders-30 and the Kapahulu Raiders (M)-0.
Games at Hanapepe Stadium will continue on the final weekend of the season, December 4, Saturday with the Charity Bowl games, this would be an East vs. West Charity Bowl game.
They are; Junior Pee Wee, East vs. West at 9 a.m., Pee Wee, East vs. West at 11 a.m. and the Midget contest East vs. West at 1 p.m.
Proceeds from this game will go to the Kaua‘i United Way.
We will also be having a punt, pass and kick competition for 3 players on each Charity Bowl team and do it during half-time.
