The Garden Island newspaper and Zonta Club of Kauai have again teamed up to try to make the holidays brighter for our needy senior citizens, children and families.
The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund has been helping Kaua‘i families for over 30 years.
Letters are sent to island agencies such as Easter Seals and the Agency on Elderly Affairs seeking referrals of clients who are most in need. Last year, the community’s generous donations helped 153 adults and 140 children.
This year, even more requests for assistance have been received. The Christmas Fund volunteers use monetary donations to purchase gift certificates and gift cards that are distributed to families and individuals.
Because of the logistical problems in distributing donated items, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Bus passes and walking shoes would help Sally make ends meet
Sally is very kind and friendly. She tries to assist anyone who needs help. Sally is on a fixed income and has gone back to school for training to supplement her meager income. sally is also trying very hard to stick to her very restricted budget. She would like to have a few monthly bus passes and a new pair of walking shoes to help her get about.
New curtains would brighten life for Leo and Maile
Leo and Maile have major health problems. Both of them suffered from strokes and now have mobility problems. Leo also has diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems. Maile uses a walker to get around and she also has heart problems. Their holiday season would be brightened if they could have new curtains for their home and personal toiletries. Money is very tight since most of their funds are used for food and medical necessities.
Uncle Sammy could use a gift certificate this year
Uncle Sammy has had many health problems to cope with lately. This year he had a pacemaker put in and now he needs a walker to get around. Uncle Sammy also had prostate cancer and has heart problems. Despite all of this he tries to keep a happy disposition but sometimes it is very difficult. A gift certificate to purchase something nice for the holidays for his wife and himself would make this holiday season a little more festive.
