LIHU‘E — Randall Honjo, sentenced to five years in prison in 2002 for the sexual assault of one of his daughters, pleaded not guilty recently to 31 new counts of promoting child abuse.
Honjo, 48, a former state harbormaster, was indicted by the grand jury Nov. 15 on the new charges of possession of child pornography on his computer.
He was arrested Nov. 23.
According to the grand-jury indictment, the new charges stem from incidents in 2000 and 2002 where Honjo possessed or disseminated material that contained minors engaging in sexual conduct.
The charges, class-C felonies, each carry a five-year maximum prison term.
Honjo appeared last week in a brown prison jumpsuit with his court-appointed lawyer, Mark Zenger. Honjo said nothing, as Zenger pleaded not guilty, received the complaint, and accepted a trial date of Feb. 22.
In 2002, the former state employee pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree sexual assault and one count of fourth-degree sexual assault against one of his daughters. The guilty verdict was the result of a plea deal, and 51 remaining sex-assault charges were dismissed.
His daughters and ex-wife have since moved to another state.
Three days before he was sentenced, in October, 2002, Honjo was accused of possessing six pieces of pornography. He also was charged with possessing 21 pieces of pornography a month after he was sentenced, according to the indictment. The other counts stem from incidents in 2000.
The computer files were found in Honjo’s possession on those dates, according to a spokesperson in the county prosecutor’s office.
