Missed opportunities proved to be the difference, as the Campbell Sabers eliminated Kaua‘i from the First Hawaiian Bank State Football Division II Championships, 29-20 last night at Moanalua High School.
In the semi-final game, Kaua‘i missed a field goal attempt and quarterback Kekoa Crowell fumbled on the one-yard line.
The Sabers struck first with 53 seconds to go in the first quarter, as Isaac Laupola scampered 63 yards for the score. Shaye Asoau’s PAT made it 7-0 in favor of Campbell.
Kaua‘i came back early in the second with 10:40 to go, as Crowell hooked up with Lucky Andres on a 10-yard TD. Frank Speetjens’ kick tied the game up at 7-7.
The Red Raiders added another score with 2:06 to go in the second, as Crowell soared a 15-yard TD pass to his favorite target, Kevin Cadiente.
Kaua‘i thought the lead would last until the half, but Campbell managed to squeak a TD in with 14 seconds to go, as James Bannister caught a 5-yard TD pass from Asoau, whose kick tied the game up at 14-14 at the half.
The Crowell to Cadiente combination answered the challene with three minutes to go in the third quarter on a 35-yard TD, however Speetjens’ PAT was blocked and Kaua‘i went up 20-14.
The Sabers roared back with just under four minutes to go in the contest to go up, 21-20. Campbell added a safety and a TD run for the 29-20 final tally.
Campbell moves on to the state division II championship game against the winner of Iolani and Hawai‘i Prep.
Leilehua upset Kahuku last night, 17-14 to move into the division I title game.
Kamehameha defeated Lahainaluna in the other semifinal game.
