‘Slam with some turkey!
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
I really don’t know what’s a better treat: Gobbling down some turkey at Thanksgiving or watching golf’s best at the PGA Grand Slam. Luckily though, I can have my turkey and eat it too!
The ‘Slam ends today and turkey day starts tomorrow. If you haven’t stopped by the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course and Hyatt Regency Kaua‘i Resort and Spa to check out the 2004 PGA Grand Slam of Golf, then you would be an unlucky individual.
Whether a golf fan or not, these guys are definitely four great reasons to get out and enjoy the championship play.
We don’t have a lot of opportunities to see pro sporting events on the island and the PGA Grand Slam is our signature event that also brings a ton of revenue to Kaua‘i. In its 11th year at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course, the PGA Grand Slam is a unique event which offers a gallery that’s personal and intimate. 2004 Masters champion Phil Mickelson agrees.
“I don’t think we’ve played in front of such an intimate size gallery, it’s very enjoyable and the people are very courteous and very easy going here in Hawai‘i.” Mickelson said.
But for 2004 PGA Championship winner Vijay Singh, the gallery at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course yesterday didn’t seem to small.
“There’s quite a lot of crowd out there and they all fall into one group, so it feels like there’s a lot of people, normally when we play in a normal golf tournament, 18, the finishing holes, there’s a lot of people around it, but there’s enough people out there,” Singh said. 2004 British Open champ Todd Hamilton also commented on the spectator experience at the PGA Grand Slam.
“I think it’s very rare, unless it’s your wife or a friend, do people actually go out and are able to follow all 18 holes of a player’s round, so this is really special that everyone gets to see probably all the shots that we’ve hit,” Hamilton said.
This is my very first time at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and I came away from day one extremely impressed with the entire experience, except maybe for the scorching sun, but that’s my problem! This is a rare opportunity for island residents to witness and like everything else, trying it once won’t hurt at all, even if it’s just watching a couple of holes, but I promise that you’ll be impressed with it.
The Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course staff did a terrific job with preparation for the event. Everything so far has gone as smooth as planned and it’s about to get better today as final round action kicks of at 9 a.m. So don’t miss your last chance to see the world’s best golfers, right in our own backyard in sunny Po‘ipu!
