Edna Marjorie Taylor
An English woman, born in New Zealand of English parents and enamored with the beauty of Kaua‘ i, died on Nov. 19, 2004, at Kauai Care Center, Waimea, at the age of 95 years, 10 months. Although old in years, Marjorie was young in heart.
Music, gardening and tennis were Marjorie’s passions, activities she enjoyed for most of her life. At 80 years old, Marjorie obtained her green card which permitted her to live full time in Kalaheo. She was a very active lady, made many friends by volunteering at the NTBG Plant site, making crafts for the gift shop, was a member of the Chorale, gave piano lessons to young and old, enjoyed reminiscing about life in England but did not want to return to live in the cold, enjoyed weekly mah jong sessions, wrote music, played her piano every day, made trips to Honolulu to spend time with her son Bill and his children.
Her music life was centered around the piano and she told the story of how her father bought her first piano when she was eight years old after asking her what she wanted for her birthday. Marjorie obtained her licentiate degree and teaching diploma from the London College of Music; taught music, speech and drama in England, created costumes for the drama productions. She also joined forces with Frances Frazier who wrote the words and Marjorie wrote the music for several Hawaiian songs competing and winning in the Mokihana Music Festival several years, including the memorable “Pele’s Lament.”
In 1929 Marjorie married Alec Taylor in Coventry, England and raised three sons, Anthony, who lives in England, Bill, resident of Honolulu and Peter (Diana) of Kalaheo. There are four granddaughters and one grandson, all of whom were educated in Hawai‘i and have chosen to live on the mainland. Robert, an MD., Emma, a stockbroker, Helene, an attorney, Tanya, a model, wife of Steven and mother of the only great grandchild and Jane, a lieutenant in the Navy.
