Kaua‘i’s sports scene heating up
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
If you were to ask me what’s the best time of the year for sports, I would undoubtedly tell you that now is the best time and here’s why:
The PGA Grand Slam starts tomorrow at the beautiful Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course and Hyatt Regency Kaua‘i Resort and Spa with Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, Todd Hamilton, and Phil Mickelson teeing it up.
The University of Hawai‘i men’s volleyball squad cruised in for an exhibition match at Kaua‘i High School Gym yesterday against the University of Pacific. It was great to see division I volleyball action, as the Raiderdome was pumpin’ with excitement.
KIF champion Kaua‘i High School moved into the semifinals of the division II state football playoffs, after terminating Pac-3 Friday night.
Kekoa Crowell, Kevin Cadiente and the rest of the Red Raider squad warned the rest of the state, that Kaua‘i football is no fluke. Kaua‘i faces Campbell at Moanalua High School, Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
Pop Warner bowl games start next week, as Kaua‘i teams crowned its champs over the weekend.
Congrats to Leon Gonsalves and his staff for putting on another wonderful season.
The annual Waimea High School softball tournament starts up on Thursday and goes through the weekend.
Some of the best high school teams in the state, including Mililani, Baldwin, Maui, Kaimuki, Pearl City, Hilo, Kamehameha-Hawai‘i, along with our three high schools, will beef it out for the hardware.
NBA games are heating up, especially the Pistons/Pacers brawl on Friday night. Fans should take on just as much of the blame as the players.
NFL teams are starting to square off for playoff spots and speaking of football, Waimea’s Jordon Dizon and the CU ‘Buffs could be bowl-bound with a win over arch-nemesis Nebraska.
Koloa’s Tyler Yates is home, getting ready for another year with the New York Mets.
Tyler said he’ll be in the bullpen full-time this season, doing relief work and he’s also getting married soon, so it’s certainly an exciting time for the Yates clan.
Kaua‘i cowboys Marcus Laymon Jr. and Randy Brun were recently crowned national champions in Oklahoma and brought home the hardware plus $15,000.
National wakeboarding championships donned Wailua River last weekend, which was a treat for the entire island to witness.
Coach Jeff Law and the UH-Hilo basketball team recently conducted a well-organized clinic for Kaua‘i’s young basketball players. King Auto Center’s first installment of KIF student athletes of the month were named. Kaua‘i’s Tina Moger and Futi Tavana capped off great volleyball seasons with the honors for the month of September.
Meanwhile, Kaua‘i’s Chelsea Smith-Wishard and Waimea’s 1/3 of the Martin triplets, Scott both took home more honors, after performing at a high-level at states. If you’re a sports fanatic like I am, then right now is almost like Christmas in November to us. Let’s enjoy it and take in as much sports as we can!
