With a team name like Flaming Hot Cheetos, it was no wonder why they were too hot to handle for opposing squads en route to the U14 girls Will Veeck Island Championship.
The Kalaheo team successfully completed the AYSO fall season with a 13-0 undefeated mark, playing teams from both regions.
But the Cheetos had to endure hard luck to claim the top prize. Three of the five playoff games were come from behind wins for the Cheetos, which included the title game against Kilauea, where Skye Shimabukuro netted the first two goals and Bryanna Prinzing played the role of hero by slamming in the golden goal for the 3-2 win.
“This was an amazing season for us and this group played together and had lots of fun,” head coach Bill Prinzing said.
The Cheetos also had to deal with the loss of two players, Kai Zirker and Tara Martin, due to ankle injuries in the playoffs.
But that didn’t stop them on their way to the championship, which included a tough first-round match against Paul Curtis’ Lihu‘e squad. Down 3-0 in the first quarter, the Cheetos found a way to get back into the game and eventually win, 6-3.
The three goals by Lihu‘e were the first goals scored against the Cheetos all season long.
“The parents are really proud of them and what made this team so special is the fact that they didn’t form any cliques and they had outstanding chemistry,” Prinzing said.
During the season, every Flaming Hot Cheeto recorded a goal and also played as goalie too.
“It all came together in the end and I’m so proud of this bunch of great girls,” Prinzing said.
