Dr. Joseph E. Yahner
Dr. Joseph E. Yahner, 73, of Kapa‘a, died Nov. 8, 2004 in Honolulu. Born June 16, 1931 in Chicago, he was a retired college professor.
He received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University, and master’s and doctorate degrees from Oregon State University. Professor emeritus of agronomy, Yahner was a teacher and extension specialist at Purdue University for 35 years before his retirement in 1998.
His interests included travel, photography and education. Upon retiring to Kaua‘i, he volunteered with the Kauai Historical Society and the American Red Cross, and was a member of the Master Gardener’s Program. He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Kapa‘a; three daughters, Marie of Phoenix, Elizabeth of Missoula, Mont., and Carol of Eugene, Ore., and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 22, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in West Lafayette, Ind. Memorials may be made to Kauai Hospice.
Makoto Morita
Makoto Morita, 79, of Hanama‘ulu, died Oct. 31, 2004 at Kuakini Medical Center on O‘ahu. Born June 8, 1925 in Hanama‘ulu, he was a member of Lihue Hongwanji. He is survived by a brother, Satoshi Morita of Reno, Nev., and several nieces and nephews. A private service was held. Arrangements were handled by Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary in Honolulu.
