KALAHEO – Natalie Mata chalked up 23 points to lead the Waimea B&G to a 33-15 win over the Lihu‘e (A) Comets, Thursday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center. For the second time this week, Mata topped the 20-point mark in their team’s victories, Tuesday night, the guard nailing 21 points, and then following that up Thursday night with 23 points, that tally coming on three 3-point bombs and seven field goals.
Mata sizzled in the fifth period with all of the westsiders’ 6-2 advantage, and closed off the night with four of the team’s seven-point sixth period, Kayla Werner adding the other three points.
Kathleen Cadiente sparked the Comets in the first half with four of the Comets’ eight points, but was limited to just a pair in the second half for a game-total six points. Werner’s field goal close to the buzzer broke an 8-8 deadlock for a 10-8 Waimea halftime lead, and her final bucket in the last frame closed the books on the game, the go-to post finishing with nine points.
In the second game of the evening, the Wailua A bested the Wailua B, 26-16 behind seven points from Lehua McCabe. Gabby Matayoshi and Leilani Laranio each added six to help the win.
Ashlyn Lee and Victoria Tuttle each notched four points for Wailua B.
