Walter Russell Haas
Walter Russell Haas, Kaua‘i veterinarian, died Nov. 9, 2004, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, following a short illness.
A 1949 graduate of Colorado State University (Fort Collins), Haas worked as a meat inspector for the Territory of Hawai‘i, and then the State of Hawai‘i, and began private veterinary practice on Kaua‘i in 1962.
Born in El Paso, Texas on Sept. 29, 1924, Haas grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, living in Colorado and on Maui before settling on Kaua‘i in 1959.
Haas’ hobbies included reading, collecting shells, playing bridge, collecting coins and collecting stamps. He was actively involved in Hui O Laka (Koke‘e Museum volunteer group), the Democratic Party of Hawaii, Boy Scouts of America, Rotary Club of Kauai, the Hawaiian Malacological Society, and the Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale Sanctuary.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mabel, his four sons, Gordon, Jay, David and Rick, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
The Haas family invites interested people to join them for “A Celebration of the Life of Walter Haas,” to be held at the family residence at 267 Kamokila Rd., Kapa‘a (Wailua Houselots), on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Call 822-5373 for any questions.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, “Doctor Walter” asked that donations be made to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, 8601 Georgia Ave., Suite 201, Silver Springs, MD 20910 (checks should include information similar to “In memory of Walter Haas”).
Enrique “Rico” Rodriguez
Enrique “Rico” Rodriguez of Hanama‘ulu died Nov. 16, 2004, at St. Francis Hospital on O‘ahu. A maintenance man for The Salvation Army, he was 58, and was born Dec. 22, 1945 in Puerto Rico.
He is survived by his wife, Estella “Bay” Rodriguez of Hanama‘ulu; son Eric (Gidget) Rodriguez of O‘ahu; daughters Annissia (Carey) Rubenstien of New Jersey; La‘e Mac Ferren of California; Pualani Chapman of Georgia; Kauai (Brian) Bock of California; and Leilani Lucas of Georgia; a brother, Rafeen Rodriguez of Puerto Rico; sister, Anna Rivera of New York; mother in law, Albertina Goias of California; 14 grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services are scheduled for Monday, Nov. 22, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary Chapel in Koloa, with viewing from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., and memorial services at 10:30 a.m. Scattering of ashes will take place at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
