Kaoru Kurashige
Kaoru Kurashige of Lihu‘e died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Nov. 11, 2004, at the age of 84. Born in Kilohana Camp, Kaua‘i, he was a retired auto mechanic. He is survived by his wife, Tsuyuko; two sons, Roland Kurashige of Honolulu and Stanley (Kaymi) Kurashige of Kapa‘a; two daughters, Linda (Bruce) Sansui and Stella (Gerald) Haraguchi, both of Hilo; four grandchildren; three brothers, Isamu (Jane) Kurashige, Tadasu Kurashige and Shigeru (Hiroko) Kurashige; sister, Hideko (Charles) Mumaw; numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. Services were held Sunday at Lihue Hongwanji Mission, officiated by the Rev. Yukiko Motoyoshi.
Arrangements were handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Eleuterio Valdez
Eleuterio “Terry” Valdez, of Puhi, died at his residence on Nov. 9, 2004. Born in the Philippines Feb. 1, 1926, he was 78, and a retired truck driver with Lihue Plantation.
He is survived by his wife, Vilma Valdez of Puhi; son, Alvin Valdez, also of Puhi; brothers Larry Galanta of California, and Magdaleno Valdez, Benjamin Valdez and Cenon Valdez, all of the Philippines; sisters, Catalina Toquero, Marina Valdez, Hermina Dagsi and Lucilla Lemi, all of the Philippines. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be Friday, Nov. 19 at Immaculate Conception Church in Kapaia, with viewing from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., and mass celebrated at 10 a.m. by the Rev. William “Bill” Shannon. Burial will follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
The family requests casual attire. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Utako Yaka
Utako Yaka of Kapa‘a died Oct. 28, 2004, at Leahi Hospital on O‘ahu. Born May 27, 1908 in Japan, she was 96. She is survived by sons Toyosaburo Yaka and Glenn Yaka; daughters Tamaki Hanashiro and Irene Maeda; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Mortuary.
Harue Yotsuda Ishii
Harue Yotsuda Ishii of Lihu‘e died Nov. 1, 2004 at her residence. A clerk with state government, she was 86, and was born on Kaua‘i.
She is survived by two daughters, Laura Ishii and Carol Matsumura, both of Lihu‘e; brothers Masao (Ann) Yotsuda of Lihu‘e, Henry (Diana) Yotsuda of Hilo, Robert (Alma) Yotsuda of Wailua, and Daniel Yotsuda of Lihu‘e; and four sisters, Kimiko Okano of Honolulu, Violet Van Epps of Kane‘ohe, Nancy (Joseph) Soares of Kalaheo, and Flora Shota of Wailua. Also surviving are a granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews. Private services were held at the Lihue Hongwanji Mission. Arrangements were handled by Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
