LPGA Tour returns to Hawai‘i
By The Garden Island
HONOLULU — The LPGA Tour is returning to Hawai‘i in 2005. A $1 million LPGA tournament will be played in late February at the Turtle Bay Resort’s Arnold Palmer Course on Oahu’s North Shore, officials said Thursday. The event will be sponsored by South Korean-television network Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS), which will provide coverage throughout Asia. The last LPGA Tour event in Hawai‘i was the 2002 Takefuji Classic, which moved to Las Vegas.
The bill for Athens Olympics: $11.6 billion
ATHENS, Greece — The bill arrived for the Athens Olympics on Friday — about $11.6 billion, and it might climb higher.
The tally announced by the government was almost double the original estimate, making the games by far the most expensive in Olympic history. The 2000 Sydney Games cost $1.5 billion and the 1996 Atlanta Games $1.72 billion.
“This is the immediate cost for the state and does not include expenditures for infrastructure,” Finance Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis said after a Cabinet meeting. He did not give a figure for the infrastructure costs.
UH Hilo clinic continues today
There will be an open basketball clinic starting at 9 a.m. at Kapa‘a High School gym. UH-Hilo coaches and players will assist kids in learning basketball skills. A mental and physical preparation clinic will start at 1 p.m., featuring UH-Hilo head coach Jeff Law, and then the main event starts at 2 p.m., as the UH-Hilo squad will hold a scrimmage. Parents, coaches, kids, and officials are all invited to attend this free clinic and scrimmage.

Ubongen, Cadiente are top hoopsters
Ashley Ubongen of Lihu‘e “B” led the way with seven points for the win over the Waimea Boys and Girls Club, 25-24 in the girls 14 and under winter basketball league on Thursday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Sera Pascual also helped out the Lihu‘e cause. Natalie Mata led Waimea with 10 points and Chaelyn Briones had seven for the westside squad. In game two, Kelsey Cadiente put up 10 points for Lihu‘e “A” in a 34-14 win over Wailua “B.”
Kathleen Cadiente scored nine to contribute to the Lihu‘e total. Gabby Sakai and Allyssa Carvalho both scored five points for Wailua.
Baseball GMs split on instant replay
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — No further review necessary: Baseball is done looking at instant replay, for now. Big league general managers split 15-15 Thursday on whether to keep exploring replay, a straw poll taken following a postseason in which umpires reversed almost every wrong call.
“Based on that vote, it’s unlikely we’ll do anything substantive in the next year to pursue instant replay,” MLB executive vice president Sandy Alderson said.
