HONOLULU — The College Football Hall of Fame requested Timmy Chang’s jersey after the Hawai‘i quarterback became the most prolific passer in college football history, school officials said Monday.
The school will donate Chang’s green jersey used for some home games, Warrior equipment coordinator Al Ginoza said.
Chang was wearing a black jersey Saturday night at Aloha Stadium when he broke Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer’s NCAA career mark of 15,031 yards. Chang finished the game with 15,303 yards, and UH still has four games to go in the regular season.
Dan Morrison, coach of the Hawai‘i quarterbacks, said having the jersey go to the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind., is a great honor for Chang and the school.
“Those are the kinds of things that stand in perpetuity,” Morrison said. “Kids 25 years from now will look at that jersey and see ‘Hawai‘i’ on it.”
Chang said he was honored, but wished others could share in the glory.
“Football is such a big team game, I wish all of our jerseys could go in there,” he said. “We shouldn’t leave anybody out. Everybody contributed to the success, from the guys in the past, to the guys now, to the trainers, to the coaches, even to my family.”
Meanwhile, Chang was named the Western Athletic Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
