Flash from Rabbit Hash
From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch – November 5, 2004
Late breaking election results: The town of Rabbit Hash, Ky., – yes, Virginia, there is a Rabbit Hash – has a new mayor. He is Junior, the Labrador retriever.
Rabbit Hash, according to the prestigious publication Governing magazine, is actually a collection of seven wooden buildings on the Ohio River about 30 miles southwest of Cincinnati. It’s registered as a National Historic District, and the need to keep it spiffed up for tourists prompted the first mayoral contest as a fund-raiser in 1998.
Votes are $1 each, and you could vote as often as you like. Historical society president Don Clare told The Associated Press the election was held “in the true Kentucky style, which is whoever has the most money wins.”
Labradors being as lovable as they are obstreperous, Junior was an easy winner over a pot-bellied pig and a donkey. Junior succeeds another dog, Goofy, who, alas, was euthanized a few years ago. Not that we recommend that for every mayor.
