LIHU‘E — The extremely wet conditions didn’t hinder the Menehune JV squad last night at Vidinha Stadium. Waimea blanked the Warriors and controlled the game en route to a 19-0 win, which was their very first win of the 2004 KIF JV football season.
Waimea’s Daniel Lizama started things off with 2:21 to go in the first quarter with an 85-yard TD run to put Waimea up 6-0. Kelly Batis nailed the PAT for the Menehune for the 7-0 lead.
Kapa‘a wasn’t able to muster anything up on offense throughout the first quarter and even in the second quarter, as Waimea’s defense stiffened.
With 6:51 in the second, Waimea’s Dustin Yamamoto scored on a 1-yard run after numerous tries by the Menehune. The PAT kick failed and Waimea held the 13-0 lead, which was the halftime score.
Fumbling was the name of the game in the third quarter, as both teams let go of the ball throughout the early parts of the third frame.
Waimea’s Adam Dizol fumbled and Kapa‘a’s Coty Salausa recovered, but the Warriors gave the ball back to the Menehune one play later.
Waimea’s Kaimana Girod failed to put three more points on the board for the Menehune, as his field goal kick failed. At the end of three periods, Waimea led, 13-0.
With 5:44 to go in the fourth quarter, Lizama hit paydirt again for the Menehune with a 28-yard TD run, after he set himself up with a long run right before his TD scamper. The PAT was blocked and the Menehune led, 19-0. Waimea’s Dizol came up big with 4:08 to go in the game with a sack that stopped a late Kapa‘a drive.
