NHL cancels all-star game
NEW YORK — The NHL lockout forced the cancellation of this season’s All-Star game, scheduled to be held in Atlanta in February.
The announcement that the midseason showcase would not be held came on the 49th day of the lockout, imposed by commissioner Gary Bettman after the collective bargaining agreement expired on Sept. 15.
The NHL and the players association haven’t met since Sept. 9 and have no plans to return to the bargaining table.
In a statement, the NHL said the earliest Atlanta can hold All-Star weekend is 2008 since the 2006 game has already been awarded to the Phoenix Coyotes and plans for the 2007 game are near completion.
Pavano becomes a free agent
NEW YORK — Carl Pavano became a free agent after meeting with Florida Marlins’ management and telling the team he wanted to test the market.
A 28-year-old right-hander who went a career-best 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA this season, Pavano is likely to be among the most coveted free agents.
State quarterfinal game at Vidinha
The 2004 HHSAA division II state football quarterfinal game has a new venue. The game was originally scheduled to take place at Hanapepe Stadium due to track resurfacing at Vidinha Stadium.
However, there is some delay with the resurfacing and the game will now be played at Vidinha Stadium on November 19.
Kaua‘i High School will play the MIL’s division II champ, which will either be Pac-3 or Kamehameha-Maui. Pac-3 has a chance to get the state berth this weekend with a win.
If Kamehameha-Maui wins, then they will head to a playoff game on Nov. 12 with Pac-3, with the winner challenging Kaua‘i on Nov. 19 at Vidinha Stadium.
Randolph hired by Mets
NEW YORK — Willie Randolph was hired by the New York Mets to take over as manager.
A six-time All-Star who was a coach with the New York Yankees for the past 11 years, Randolph replaces Art Howe, fired at the end of the season.
Randolph met earlier in the day with new general manager Omar Minaya, who also had second interviews with the other finalists, Texas hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo and former Houston and Anaheim manager Terry Collins.
Lehman named U.S. Ryder Cup captain
Tom Lehman was introduced as the U.S. Ryder Cup captain for the 2006 matches in Ireland, charged with ending European dominance that soared to a new level this year when the Americans were dealt their worst loss ever.
In September, Europe won the Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills, 18 1/2-9 1/2, to capture the cup for the seventh time in the last 10 matches.
Seau to miss rest of season
DAVIE, Fla. — Miami Dolphins linebacker Junior Seau will miss the rest of the season with a torn pectoral muscle that will require surgery.
The Dolphins placed him on injured reserve.
Eddie Moore, a second-round draft pick in 2003, will replace Seau and make his first NFL start Sunday against Arizona. Seau, 35, planned to undergo the first major operation of his career Thursday in his hometown of San Diego. He has missed only nine games in his career.
Birdstone retires after win
NEW YORK — Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone was retired from racing after chipping a bone in his left front ankle during the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Birdstone, who spoiled Smarty Jones’ Triple Crown attempt by winning the Belmont on June 5, finished seventh behind Ghostzapper in Saturday’s $4 million Classic at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.
The chip was discovered Tuesday during a routine exam by veterinarian Joe Migliacci at Lone Star.
The problem is not serious, and surgery is unlikely now that the horse has been retired.
Mizzou placed on probation
INDIANAPOLIS — Missouri’s basketball team was placed on three years’ probation for NCAA recruiting violations but avoided a ban on postseason play. The infractions committee took away one scholarship next year and two in 2006-07 and limited all basketball coaches to recruiting on campus until November 2005. Missouri chancellor Brady Deaton said the school would not appeal. The committee found the Tigers violated NCAA recruiting rules from 1999-2003 and rejected the school’s explanation that most of the violations were inadvertent.
Cohen still out of action
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Sasha Cohen will miss her second Grand Prix series event because of a lingering back injury, withdrawing from next week’s Cup of China. Cohen didn’t defend her title at Skate America last month because of a severe back strain, which doctors believe might be related to a season-ending injury four years ago. She scaled back her training and is doing physical therapy to strengthen her back, but she said doctors told her she needs more rest.
Spurrier withdraws from Florida search
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — If Steve Spurrier decides to coach again, it won’t be at his alma mater. Spurrier withdrew his name from consideration Thursday to replace Ron Zook.
