PUHI — You can call it deja vu in KIF cross-country, as the same winners from the previous three meets have won the fourth one at Island School with the all important KIF meet coming up at Kapa‘a High School.
Kaua‘i’s Chelsea Smith-Wishard and Waimea’s Scott Martin finished strong for the fourth time in as many tries to cross the finish line first at Island School on Saturday. Smith-Wishard outpaced Waimea’s Rachel Martin, who finished about 30 seconds behind. Kula’s Gillian Pickett, Kaua‘i’s Kassy Morishige, and Kapa‘a’s Alex Pond got the 3-5 spots. Martin led the whole way, finishing almost a minute ahead of his brother, Nathan. Kaua‘i’s Chad Naganuma manned the third slot again, about 15 seconds behind Nathan, and Island’s Chris Marsh and Allan Hoffman rounded out the top five boys finishers.
Teamwise, the Kaua‘i girls edged Kapa‘a for the win. Waimea finished in third, with both Island and Kula not qualifying for the team competition because of the lack of runners.
In the boys race, Island School took the top spot, over Kaua‘i, Waimea, Kula, and Kapa‘a. For complete results and times, see the scoreboard on page B2. The KIF meet starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Kapa‘a High School. This is the qualifying meet for the competitors. The state cross-country meet happens on Novmber 12 on the Big Island.
