A member of both the founding and first elected boards of the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative, Kapa‘a’s Dennis Esaki has resigned from the KIUC board, citing pressing personal reasons and a desire to devote more time to his engineering and land-surveying business.
Ron Kouchi, KIUC board vice chair, said Esaki’s work on the board was taking up a lot of his time and attention, and Esaki felt it necessary to immediately begin paying more attention to his business, Esaki Surveying & Mapping Inc.
Esaki served as board vice chair, and chair of the International and Economic Development committees during his tenure on the board. Earlier this year he was selected to serve on a new Policy Committee. Kouchi said it was “certainly with regret and heavy heart” that Esaki submitted his resignation.
Esaki’s term on the board was to have run through March 2006. According to the KIUC bylaws, any vacancy on the board “shall be filled for the un-expired term by a majority (vote) of the directors” in office. Kouchi said the bylaws also state that there can be between seven and 17 board members, and the remaining board members decided to give director Susan Stayton the longer term of Esaki’s seat, and operate with eight directors until board elections are held in March 2005. At that time, there will be three seats up for grabs, according to the KIUC Web site, www.kiuc.coop: Esaki, Walt Barnes and Saburo “Sab” Yoshioka. Directors whose terms expire in March 2006 are Gardiner, Kouchi and Stayton. The terms of directors Jim Mayfield, Dee Crowell and Ray Paler expire in March 2007.
