WAIMEA — The Kapa‘a girls varsity volleyball squad are smokin’ right now after sliding past Waimea, 25-19, 25-21 at the Clem Gomes Gymnasium last night to go 2-0 in the second round, which put them right in the driver’s seat.
In the first set, the Warriors cruised with help from Amniesty Ragsac, setter Joliann Arzadon, and heavy hitter Jennifer Lindsey.
The Waimea attack was led by Banana Kajiwara, Nue Wong, and Robyn Arrington. Ragsac continued to pound away in the second set with a slam to give the Warriors an 8-5 early lead.
Poe Gantt followed her teammates lead by slamming one home herself for the 12-8 Kapa‘a advantage.
Mallorie Hepa kept the Menehune close with a kill to pull them closer to Kapa‘a and a Tialei Agader ace made it 16-11 in favor of Waimea.
Waimea’s Wong found her stride with two kills to chip away at the Kapa‘a lead of 17-13. Then, Kapa‘a’s Gantt served an ace, but Wong answered with a kill for a 19-14 score.
Arzadon’s kill gave the Warriors a commanding lead at 22-17, but the Menehune refused to go down easy, as Kajiwara put two balls down on the hardwood to inch the Menehune closer to the Warriors at 23-19. The longest rally of the night followed, as both squads pushed the ball over the net for about a minute, until the play ended with a Kapa‘a error.
Another Kajiwara kill made the score 23-21 in favor of the Warriors, but Kapa‘a managed to grab the last two points for the match win, as Arzadon’s kill gave them the match at 25-21.
In JV action, it was a Waimea sweep, as the boys beat Kapa‘a, 25-17, 25-23. Meanwhile, the Menehune girls defeated the Warrior girls, 25-11, 25-24. Due to an early deadline, the varsity boys match results will be posted in Friday’s edition of The Garden Island.
Kapa‘a travels to Kaua‘i on Oct. 16 for the next KIF volleyball match.
