Kaua‘i boys, Waimea girls win again

Red Raider boys and Menehune girls reigned once again with perfect 2-0 records in KIF bowling this past Saturday at Lihu‘e Lanes. Top boys bowler Travis Fontanilla scorched the lanes for Kaua‘i. Fellow Red Raider Cedric Macadangdang finished second overall at 535, with Kapa‘a’s Bernard (525) and Wesley (515) finishing third and fourth. Kaua‘i’s Dominic Piano rounded out the top five for the boys. Waimea’s top bowler was Anthony Baptiste with a 350, followed by Kekoa Maguda.
Kaua‘i’s Mei-Ling Keopuhiwa got the top score for the girls with a 600. Waimea’s Jenni Ueno (526), Sharla Shimono (514), and Syann Sagawa (503) rounded out the top four with Kaua‘i’s Jenna Yamamoto (481) coming in fifth. Kapa‘a’s top bowlers were Donica A. (426) and Kelii C. (419).
Keopuhiwa, Macadangdang, Fontanilla, and Baptiste all bowled games of 200 or more.
The next KIF bowling match starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 9 at Lihu‘e Lanes.
Yesan, McKee top golfers
Romy Yesan’s net score of 62 and Dennis McKee’s 64 were good enough for the top prizes in the “A” and “B” flights at the Kukuiolono Snack Shop Moe Wai Golf Club’s tournament on Sept. 18. In the “A” flight, Paul Schurch (65), Ernie Ferreira (66), Hans Gunter (70), and Jim Dawson (71) finished 2-5 and in the “B” flight, Kyle Watanabe (66), Gary Hall (67), Keoni Mahuka (67), and Victor Pila finished from 2-5.
Steve Niau’s shot on hole number 6, Romy Yesan’s shot on eight, Ernie Ferreira’s shot on 15, and Mike Murray’s shot on 17 were all good enough for closest to the hole honors.
UH’s Hittle earns WAC honors
Hawai‘i right side hitter Tara Hittle has been named the WAC player of the week. This is the first WAC player of the week honor of the year for the freshman and the second for the Rainbow Wahine this season. The Wahine extended their winning streak against unranked teams to 184. UH also extended its WAC winning streak to 80 straight matches. UH plays Boise State and UTEP at home on Friday (7:30 p.m.) and Sunday (4:30 p.m.) Both games will be televised on K5.
UH’s Ayat among WAC’s best
Hawai‘i kicker Justin Ayat, a senior from Waipahu was named the WAC’s special teams player of the week. Ayat made all three of his field goal attempts and all five of his extra points in a 44-16 win over Tulsa. He hit a 56 yard FG in the first quarter that tied the UH record set by Jason Elam in 1992. It was the longest FG by a WAC player in nearly two years. Ayat’s 14 points moved him into the WAC’s all-time top 10 scoring, as he is now seventh with 306 points.
Kaua‘i lacrosse starting up
Kaua‘i Youth Lacrosse Association, who’s season is in the spring are looking for people who are interested in coaching, being an assistant coach, or just helping out the organization.

Lihu‘e baseball, t-ball business
T-Ball Registration for ages 5-7 begins on Monday Oct. 18 through Friday, Oct. 22, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Lihu‘e Baseball League Portable, Lihu‘e County Park. All players must submit 2 copies of their Birth Certificate & Medical Insurance cards. Please call Wayne 245-9110 or Warren 245-3251 if you have any questions.
The Lihu‘e Baseball League will also be accepting head coaches applications for all divisions (Shetland-Pony), and will be available during the above registration dates.
