Kaua‘i triathlete, Wayne Mehl, of Koloa has qualified and will be racing in the World Championship Ironman Triathlon held in Kona October 16. Wayne qualified for the World Championships placing second in his division at the Australian Ironman Championships held in Australia, April of this year.
Since that time, he has won division titles in the Honolulu Triathlon Olympic Trials held in Honolulu on April 18, the Honolulu Tinman Triathlon held in July, the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon held in August in San Francisco, and he also placed second in his division at the Korean Ironman Championships on Jeju Island, Korea on August 29.
Wayne’s coach is Scott Molina, of Christchurch, New Zealand and is a former professional world champion Ironman. Scott coaches via internet and email. Scott will also be racing in this year’s Kona World Championship.
This will be Wayne’s 14th Ironman distance triathlon. It starts with a 2.5 mile swim, followed by 112 miles on the bike, and finishes running a 26.2 mile marathon. Wayne estimates he has put 25,000 miles on his bike training on Kaua‘i over the last 5 years.
The Kona World Championships will air on a delayed hour long special TV broadcast and www.ironmanlive.com, which provides real time progress on the race that starts at 7 a.m. and finishes well into the evening. There are over 1,500 entrants from more than 50 countries.
