Two North shore residents, one a juvenile, were arrested in connection to an assault that forced a man to be flown to O‘ahu.
According to police, David Stewart, 21, of Hanalei, and a 17-year-old Anahola resident were arrested for first-degree assault Saturday night after the incident on Kuhio Highway.
According to Kaua‘i Police Department officials, at about 7:40 p.m. Saturday, a Hanalei man was walking on Aku Road in Hanalei when he was approached by two individuals in a white Nissan pickup truck.
Police said the assailants exited the vehicle and chased the victim to Kauhale Center (on the corner of Aku Road and Kuhio Highway, across from Ching Young village), where he was apparently struck from behind. The victim reportedly fell to the pavement, striking his head.
Witnesses provided descriptions of the alleged assailants, and the 17-year-old was arrested at about 10:30 p.m., followed by Stewart’s arrest at about 11:30 p.m., according to KPD.
The victim, initially taken to Wilcox Hospital, was transported by air ambulance to Queen’s Hospital where he was listed in serious condition, said Cyndi Mei Ozaki, county public information officer.
No motive has yet been uncovered, a police official said. The investigation is continuing.
Police are asking for the public’s assistance. Anyone with information about the assault is asked to contact Lt. Asher, Kaua‘i Police Department Investigative Services Bureau at 241-1680.
