Many Kaua‘i folks feel recycling should be a priority. Here’s a way to get involved with the effort to keep reusable items from piling up in the landfill: Recycling Kaua‘i Style.
This annual event, now in its second year, helps demonstrate the importance of recycling, said founders and coordinators Desiree Duclayan-Parsonson and James Parsonson Jr. The event is scheduled to take place at Kukui Grove Center in November.
Recycling Kaua‘i Style organizers are calling for Kaua‘i businesses and individuals to participate in raising awareness about recycling. Informational booths showing Earth-friendly products and services will be set up around the stage.
“We produce more garbage than what we consume. We don’t have the balance in our American lifestyles, because it’s based on packaging that we don’t use,” James Parsonson Jr. said recently. “It’s about how we use our resources. It’s for the future.” This year, some new additions to Recycling Kaua‘i Style could make this event even more fun and, possibly, relevant to all.
A craft fair will feature Kaua‘imade items that are created with recycled and reused materials.
The “Reinvented Fashions” contest will challenge the fashion-minded to create a new outfit from something used. Adding to the challenge is the rule that states at least half of the item remain intact.
“I have always enjoyed fashion and making my own designs,” said Duclayan-Parsonson, the owner of Destination Endless Studio, a modeling school and talent agency.
She said she’s often received compliments on her unique, reused and recycled outfits.
With this fashion contest, she’s hoping that people will realize it is not only fun and fashionable, but environmentally friendly.
“It’s more of a symbol, a statement — ‘I recycled my clothes,’” Parsonson added.
