PO‘IPU – Over a hundred local golfers representing community business organizations turned out Sunday to demonstrate their support for education as well as enjoy an afternoon at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course for the second Fore! Education golf tournament.
Kaua‘i schools superintendant Daniel Hamada said that the tournament raised over $14,000 last year that was divided among the student councils, PTSA, and school administrators who applied for scholarships for seminars and programs designed to develop leadership.
He was hopeful that this year’s tournament would bring in between $15-20,000 with the proceeds being allocated to the same programs.
“When you see this kind of support just for education – a popular golf course closing both their course as well as dining facility on a day when they could be hosting paying customers, you cannot help but be touched,” said Hamada who himself is not a golfer, but spent the afternoon in a putting contest among other educators who found time for their own putting tournament on the golf course practice greens.
Among the field were golfers such as Mary Bea Porter-King as well as a team from King Auto Center headed by Charlie King, and Sharron Weber and a team from Tire Warehouse, a longtime supporter of charitable golf tournaments.
