LIHU‘E — It took three sets in both matches but the Waimea High School JV teams took control in the third sets to win both boys and girls contests yesterday at the Raiderdome.
The JV girls started things off with a tight first set, but Kaua‘i pulled away in the end for a 25-19 win. The Menehune gained momentum early in the second set and ran away with a 25-16 triumph.
In the third and final set, both teams fought back and forth, until the Menehune found the winning combination en route to a 15-10 win, which gave them the match.
On the boys side, Waimea was able to dominate from the start and took the first set in a landslide over Kaua‘i, 25-4, but the Red Raiders came back to win the second set, 25-18.
Like the girls, the Menehune boys withstood the Red Raider hit parade to take the third and deciding set, 15-11, for the match victory.
Chris Newcomb and Markland Soliva led Waimea to the first set win, with help from Keelan Sakuda, Alton Shimatsu, and Calsen Agrade. Kaua‘i’s Kawika Mayo highlighted the Red Raider charge. Kevin Chiba’s ace ended it in the first in favor of the Menehune.
Jordan Cox led the Red Raiders in the second set with two kills to set the pace.
Helping out Cox were Dan Riggle and Royce Overlock, who joined hands for a huge Red Raider block. Newcomb managed to keep Waimea close, but a Cox ace nailed the coffin for the Kaua‘i second set win.
Sakuda roofed Cox to give Waimea the early 8-4 advantage in the third set.
Newcomb continued to come up big for the Menehune with a key ace.
Kelsey Hesapene got into the scoring spree with an ace for Waimea to give them a commanding 13-8 lead.
A Newcomb slam ended the contest, 15-11 in favor of the Menehune.
Due to an early deadline, the boys and girls varsity match results will be published in tomorrow’s edition of The Garden Island.
