Kauai Christian Fellowship turns 13 years old this month, and the church community, whose campus is located in Po‘ipu, is throwing a huge party with loads of food, music, carnival games, a water slide, go-carts, and a piece of their Graceland Skatepark, currently under construction.
Everyone around the island is invited to the celebration, which is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 19, church leaders said.
“A Christian community noted for their work with young people and contemporary flair, Kauai Christian Fellowship has still not lost their vision for teen-agers, but has also enlarged their work to include events and ministries for adults and families,” church leaders said. After meeting for 10 years at a small space in Rainbow Plaza in Kalaheo, the church moved to a new location on six acres of land along the then-newly- created Koloa bypass road (Ala Kinoiki).
Three years ago, KCF leaders stepped into their new 13,000 square-foot building — and promptly began to outgrow it, said Rick Bundschuh, one of the regular teaching pastors at the church.
“We seem to be attracting a lot of folks who never thought they would enjoy coming to church,” Bundschuh said.
Now, the church membership includes a few hundred adults who attend regularly, more youth, and possibly due to their location, “plenty tourists,” Bundschuh said.
Built with state-of-the-art audio/ visual capabilities, a 4,000- square-foot youth center, a full commercial kitchen and a skateboard park under construction, this is not your typical pew-andstained- glass-window type of church, church leaders said.
“This is a party, and to be honest, I think it’s a mistake to think that Christians don’t know how to party. When we have parties, we pull out all the stops,” Bundschuh said.
“On top of that, it’s the ongoing stuff like the skate park and the go-cart track. We are real youthoriented, so we do things that will interest kids,” he said.
“We attempt to minister to the whole person, the spiritual side for sure. People also have a social side, an intellectual side, an emotional side. We try to relate to people in a way that speaks to all those aspects, in a positive way,” he said.
Anniversary and holiday celebrations notwithstanding, Kauai Christian Fellowship also hosts a yearly Super Bowl bash, has “base camp” discussion gatherings, hula, women’s and men’s Bible-study sessions, foreign missions, theater performances, and movie screenings with related discussions (think Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ”).
Starting next Sunday, Sept. 26, Kauai Christian Fellowship leaders begin offering two Sunday worship gatherings, at 8:30 a.m.
and 10:15 a.m. — the first time in their history they’ll offer double services.
To join in the anniversary celebration, call at 742-9396 to reserve tickets for $10 for adults and $5 for youth 12 and under.
