LIHU‘E — The high powered offense of the Kaua‘i High School varsity football squad might want to take a few notes from their JV counterparts.
The Red Raider junior squad jolted Kapa‘a High School, 37-7 on Friday night to open up the KIF junior varsity season.
The fireworks started early with Red Raider sophomore Bradley Semana crashing through the left side of the Warrior defensive line and scoring from 12 yards out to give Kaua‘i the early advantage.
Kaua‘i freshman Micah Alayvilla got into the scoring act with a one-yard TD off of a reverse to put Kaua‘i up, 14-0. Red Raider kicker Blake Gingerich was successful in his first two PAT tries.
After a Eugene Bejo interception, which was returned to the Kapa‘a 35, Kaua‘i’s Semana found his favorite spot once again through the left side of the Kapa‘a defense for a 22 yard scoring run. Gingerich’s PAT made the half-time score, 21-0 in favor of the Red Raiders.
Kapa‘a came out hungry in the third quarter and was able to put something up on the scoreboard. Sophomore runningback Travis Nakamura grabbed the ball and ran for a 64 yard TD to inch Kapa‘a closer to Kaua‘i, 21-7. Kicker Coty Salausa nailed the PAT for the Warriors.
Red Raider sophomore, Brendan Young, who amassed a chunk of yardage during the game, finally go into the endzone late in the third quarter with a 15 yard TD run to give Kaua‘i a 27-7 commanding lead, as Gingerich’s PAT was blocked.
But the Kaua‘i kicker quickly forgot about his PAT failure and booted a 45 yard field goal, which could’ve gone a lot farther and gave the Red Raiders a 30-7 lead.
Kaua‘i wasn’t done putting points up on the board, as Alayvilla had the last say with a 29-yard TD run, for his second one of the game. Gingerich’s PAT made the final score 37-7 in favor of the Red Raiders.
The next KIF football contest happens this Friday at Hanapepe Ballpark, with Kaua‘i High taking its 1-0 record to face the Waimea Menehune. Game time is 5 p.m. for the JV and varsity action starts at 7:35 p.m.
