Officials at the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands were recently recognized for contributions to help the island’s hungry residents.
The PMRF leaders organized food and fund drives that led to them being named the top Kaua‘i contributor to the Hawai‘i Foodbank among Neighbor-Island donors.
Other top Neighbor-Island donors were Westin Maui Hotel for Maui, and the Pacific Radio Group for the Big Island.
Leaders in the state Department of Human Services and other top food donors were recognized for their contributions to the Hawai‘i Foodbank this year.
Lillian Koller, director of the state Department of Human Services, and Richard Grimm, president of the Hawai‘i Foodbank, presented certificates of commendation from Gov. Linda Lingle to DHS and IS agencies for donating the most pounds of food for their groups.
Examples of the groups included the executive- branch coalition, the private-school coalition, and the law coalition.
State Rep. David Pendleton was the top donor from the legislative coalition. “The Foodbank’s annual food drive is a sobering reminder that there are people in this state who lack one of life’s basic necessities — food,” Koller said.
“When you look at the outstanding efforts of these groups and individuals, you can truly appreciate why Hawai‘i is called the aloha state.” U.S. Department of Agriculture Under Secretary Eric Bost and USDA Western Region Administrator Allen Ng were among those in attendance at the Hawai‘i Foodbank main site on O‘ahu, to recognize the groups and individuals. Other groups recognized were United Airlines, Doubletree Waikiki Hotel, Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Hawai‘i, Curves for Women, Cades Schutte Fleming and Wright, Hawai‘i Management Alliance Association, Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu Fire Department, ASSETS School, Wheeler Elementary School, University of Hawai‘i College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, and First Judicial Circuit District Court.
“The 118,000 people served in our state each week are truly fortunate to have such caring individuals and corporate partners leading the fight against hunger in Hawai‘i,” Grimm said.
