LIHU‘E — If you would’ve guessed that the first score of the 2004 KIF football season would be a safety, then you’d probably be alone with that conjecture because Kapa‘a High School put a duece on the scoreboard, but that would be their final score as, Kaua‘i High School came out on top, 20-2.
Both teams started off sloppy in the first quarter, with a pair of three and out series for the two squads.
Kapa‘a got the first score on the board with a safety, as Kaua‘i quarterback Kekoa Crowell failed to make it out of the endzone to avoid the two points.
The start of the second quarter mirrored the first with both Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a squandering scoring opportunities.
However, the Red Raiders managed to jump ahead at 2:49 in the second, with a two yard TD pass from Crowell to Frank Speetjens, but he failed to convert the PAT, which put Kaua‘i ahead, 6-2. A 38 yard Brian Rodriguez run and a 15 yard pass to Chad Lopez, along with a pass interference call led to the score. The Warriors intercepted two Crowell passes, one by Kai Kanoho and the other by Adrian Agaran, but Kapa‘a failed to push the ball into the endzone the rest of the half. Alan Satta came up with a nice defensive play, knocking the ball away from a Kapa‘a receiver to end the half with the Red Raiders up, 6-2. After a Kapa‘a punt early in the third quarter, Crowell threw a 25 yard bomb to Jett Jasper, which gave the Red Raiders great field position. Crowell decided to take it into the endzone himself with a 3 yard bootleg TD, along with a Speetjens PAT, to give Kaua‘i a 13-2 advantage. Kaua‘i’s Satta picked off another Kalima Leong pass that stopped a potential Kapa‘a drive at the end of the third period. The Red Raiders struck again at the start of the fourth quarter, as a pass from Crowell to Kevin Cadiente gave Kaua‘i, a 20-2 win. Speetjens was successful with his last PAT.
In JV action, Kaua‘i slammed Kapa‘a, 37-7. Coming up big for the Red Raiders were Bradley Semana (2 TD’s), Michael Alayvilla (2 TD), Brendan Young (1 TD), and Blake Gingerich, who nailed a 45-yard FG, along with numerous PAT’s. Kaua‘i brings its 1-0 mark to Hanapepe Stadium next week Friday (Sept. 17) to face Waimea.
