“Fiddler on the Roof” is a tale set in the small Russian village of Anatevka on the eve of the Russian Revolution in 1905. It tells the humorous and sometimes heartbreaking story about a Jewish man, Tevye, who struggles to preserve his families traditions in the middle of a changing world. The show includes musical hits including “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Tradition,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and “Sunrise, Sunset.” “Fiddler on the Roof” will team two of Kaua‘i’s most experienced theater talents, Bobbee Downs and Mary MacDermott, in a joint production by Hawaii Children’s Theatre and Kauai Community Players.
Downs will serve as education and technical director, with MacDermott as director and choreographer. Musical direction will be handled by Arnold Meister and David Conrad. The show is scheduled to run the last three weekends in November at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall. “This beloved story is ultimately one of the celebration of life in the face of adversity.
It is an ageless tale of how we all survive and thrive through the transformation and celebration of our traditions: traditions which give us a greater sense of connectedness to our family, community, nature and God,” MacDermott said. Downs will lead a children’s theater workshop that starts Tuesday, Sept. 7. All children in grades one to 12 are welcome to enroll in the 12-week program. Students will rehearse two to three days a week after school, and perform as part of the full cast. Enrollment is limited to 25 participants. Tuition assistance is available.
“This show deals with issues that are serious in nature, and I believe it will offer students a chance to perform and learn in a way we’ve never seen before.
I think that the younger actors will be able to grow by having the opportunity to work on such a challenging show,” Downs said. “The most exciting part of our work is seeing the growth from one session to the next in our returning students, and the level of artistic growth in each production, as well as igniting the spark in young people,” said HCT board member Alisa Yee. Classes will be held at the Kauai Association of Performing Arts (KAPA) facility in Puhi. Registration forms are available by calling HCT at 246-8985, Downs at 822-2628, or by email at bobbee@aloha.net, or Debra Blachowiak at 639-2437. A late registration fee will be charged after Friday, Sept. 3.
