Kaua‘i sure has a lot of talented individuals in the sport of tennis and a local guy showed that he could play with the rest of the country, as he almost played his way to the top.
Mark Deckwitz, the son of Fred and Marianne Deckwitz of Wailua Homesteads competed very successfully in the National Men’s 45’s Grass Court Tennis Championships in Philadelphia at the Germantown Cricket Club held last week.
The draw of 128 has mostly teaching pros in it. The fact that Mark is an Airline pilot by profession makes it more remarkable.
He is the current number-one ranked player in the 45 age group in the State of Hawai‘i, he was not seeded but reached the finals with his doubles partner Whitney Kraft of Fort Lauderdale Fla., where the number one team beat them 3-6,6-4,7-5.
He is well known on Kaua‘i since he enjoys playing with all kinds of players from different levels. Congratulations to the Silver Medal recipient!
In addition to Deckwitz, another local product, Barbara Hubbard, the wife of Mark Hubbard (Grove Farm) and mother of Mike and Jeff Hubbard, top local surfers, recently won a prestigious award for her tennis abilities.
“I have a wonderful supporting cast and great teammates, so a piece of the award goes to them also,” Hubbard said.
Hubbard is one of the top women’s tennis players in the country in her age division, yet remains so humble despite her great talent.
