Employment McKnight calls the familyowned Kaua‘i Inn Resort in Niumalu “the ultimate recyclers on the island.” The hotel (which the family has owned since 1994) uses original hardwood floors, with marble, doors and sinks from the Waiohai and furniture from the Westin.
Family Married to Tom for 36 years.
They have two sons, Tony, who serves as the hotel’s manager, and Aaron, a master’s (pre med) student at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa; and a daughter, Megan, 21, a cancer survivor (since age 17) and a college junior in Washington, where she’s a fine arts major. All three are graduates of Kaua‘i High School.
What do you like about The Garden Island? When she’s not working one of her 12-hour shifts, McKnight says she keeps up on isle news — she’s been a reader since moving to Kaua‘i in 1986.
“I read The Garden Island to keep informed about what’s going on around the Garden Island … and our guests enjoy the paper each morning with their complimentary continental breakfasts … our guests come from all over the world, commercial people from Honolulu and kama‘ainas as well.” What do you like about living on Kaua‘i? “I like the diversity of the cultures.” What is one thing you would change about Kaua‘i? “Improve public transportation,” McKnight said.
She thought for just another moment before commenting about Po‘ipu, the town she calls home. “I just think about all the future developments there.
That’s not the reason we moved there. Now Po‘ipu has more of a transient population. We don’t all know each other. I’m not sure I want to live there anymore,” she said. “I like neighborhoods.”
