HANAPEPE — Two Waimea teams came out to play last night at Hanapepe Stadium, but only one squad took home the win, as the Menehune prevailed, 28-14.
Big Blue nearly got on the scoreboard first, as Justin Estes failed to convert a 43-yard field goal attempt at the 7:00 minute mark in the first quarter. Hawai‘i Prep grabbed the lead early in the second with a 10-yard run from Michael Kopra, who also kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Ka Makani lead. Waimea struck back with a 5-yard TD run via Jon-Anthony Reyes, but the PAT was blocked and Waimea trailed, 7-6.
The Ka Makani went through the air for their second score of the game, as Dylan Springmeter threw a 9-yard TD strike to Kopra, for his second score of the evening. Hawai‘i Prep converted the PAT for a 14-6 lead in the third period.
Then Justin Estes got into the scoring spree with a tough scoring run. Waimea quarterback Max Hadwin got a terrific block from Kenny Estes to cross the goal line for the two point conversion that tied the game at 14 a piece at the end of the third quarter. With just over six minutes to go, a Hadwin to Justin Estes 33-yard connection put the Menehune in prime position to win the game. After a few tries at the endzone, Hadwin plunged through for the 1-yard TD, with the Estes PAT to give Waimea the 21-14 lead, as Hadwin added a long run to make the final score, 28-14.
Waimea travels to Hilo and Kaua‘i faces San Clemente at Vidinha on August 27. Kapa‘a goes to Maui to face Lahainaluna on August 28.
