WAIMEA — The annual Blue-and-White tournament in Waimea looks more like a red and purple tourney, as both Kaua‘i High School and Damien got the top seeds after pool play was all said and done.
The Red Raiders were the only squad to finish pool play undefeated, with six straight wins. Iolani got the second seed with four wins and two ties. Maryknoll, Waipahu, Pearl City purple picked up the 3, 4, and 5 seeds. Keaau and Waimea white rounded out pool white with the 6 and 7 seeds.
In pool blue, Waimea and Hawai‘i Baptist tied for the second seed with three wins and three ties a piece. Pearl City white grabbed the fourth seed, followed by Castle and Kapa‘a, who tied for fifth, and Iolani white rounded out the field with the seventh seed.
The elimination rounds started yesterday afternoon and will continue tomorrow morning, with a different format. Teams will play a best of three match, up to 25 points, with the third set going to 15 points.
In second day pool blue play, Waimea blue upended Iolani white, 21-12, 21-18. Damien split with Pearl City white, 20-21, 21-13, but were able to sneak past Kapa‘a, 21-19, 21-13. Iolani white fell to Castle, 21-16, 21-15. Pearl City white took the loss against Hawai‘i Baptist, 21-17, 21-18 and split with Kapa‘a, 21-16, 13-21. Hawai‘i Baptist split with Castle, 20-21, 21-11. Castle tied Kapa‘a, 21-19, 15-21.
Meanwhile, in day two action for pool white, Iolani beat Maryknoll, 15-21, 21-15. Kaua‘i blanketed Pearl City purple, 21-12, 21-7 and Maryknoll, 21-19, 21-17. Waimea white ran past Keaau, 21-20, 21-6. Pearl City purple defeated Maryknoll, 21-16, 21-17. Waipahu got a win and a split against Keaau, 21-17, 21-16 and Maryknoll, 21-14 20-21. Maryknoll came back to beat Keaau, 21-15, 21-10.
