LIHU‘E — With pool play completed, the playoffs take center stage at Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a Gyms, with the preliminaries starting at 8:00 a.m.
Kaua‘i High School head volleyball coach Rich Roberts has done a splendid job with the challenge, which has gone extremely smooth and yesterday Roberts celebrated a birthday (Happy belated birthday, Coach Rich!), but wasn’t able to supply the correct number (age), as he tried to keep very busy to avoid anyone asking him.
But back to the challenge, as Roosevelt was able to stave off a tough Kamehameha-Maui charge for the top seed in Pool A, followed by host Kaua‘i, Kamehameha-Maui, Dublin, Lincoln City Tigers, Rio Mesa, and Iowa.
Friday’s pool play started off with two straight wins by Kamehameha-Maui, who beat the Lincoln City Tigers, 25-15, 25-19, and Rio Mesa, 25-18, 25-13.
Roosevelt continued the assault on Rio Mesa with a win against the California squad, 25-11, 25-18. Host Kaua‘i brought out the big guns and slapped around Iowa, who wasn’t able to pick up a win in pool play.
Then, the showdown between Roosevelt and Kamehameha-Maui, which was probably the most exciting match of the day, put the Rough Riders at the top with a three set win, 25-15, 23-25, 15-9.
In Pool B, Waimea High School grabbed two straight wins, including one against Pearl City, who was undefeated in pool play going into the match. The Menehune utilized their great defense to stump the Chargers, 25-22, 25-21. Waimea used the momentum from the Pearl City game to cruise past Leilehua, 25-19, 25-17.
Meanwhile, Santa Barbara jolted Leilehua, 25-14, 25-11. Kapa‘a then continued its hot streak by slamming Maryknoll, 25-18, 25-11. Santa Barbara got another win by stunning Kaua‘i (White), 25-9, 25-8.
