Walk/Bike Path Stages
By Linda Ornellas
On August second I attended a Friends of Kamalani meeting. Thomas Noyes prepared an excellent power point presentation on the six stages of the 17-mile walk-bike path. It is a wonderful idea, full of possibilities for all of us who enjoy walks along our most precious resource, the ocean.
Since we were such a small group, I want to share some of what I learned. I hope more of you will get excited too, join in, and support a project that will serve our residents and visitors for many years.
We who have lived here for generations have seen our lifestyle and people change in some alarming ways. Fortunately we still may be able to amend some of the poor planning and disappointments with this project. In all that we collectively do, there will be trade offs. There are many environmental issues and different opinions to consider. I choose to see this as an opportunity to promote a healthier lifestyle for our families. An opportunity to assure that our children will not be pushed away from the coast, as they already are priced out of beach front properties.
It is naive to believe that this is a perfect project. I’m not excited about this path becoming a significant tourist draw. However this is our reality. If there is a way to exploit it for an extra buck, someone will. This old saying helps to keep things in perspective, “What’s good for the flowers is also good for the weeds.” In all things we take the good with the bad…
This is a worthy project and I hope to see more families participating in its development.
