John K. Tremaine, Jr. of Honolulu, Maui, the Big Island and Lihu‘e, died July 28, 2004, at his home in Lihu‘e at the age of 66.
Born Aug. 18, 1937, in Honolulu, he was a civil superintendent for Goodfellow Brothers , Inc.
He is survived by his wife: Magdelena “Maggie” Tremaine of Lihu‘e; three sons: John Kaena Tremaine, III of Kekaha, Jaeson Tremaine of Makena, Maui, and Kaimana “Mana Man” Tremaine of Hanapepe; one daughter: Jaedene “Tita” Waiala Kajiwara of Waimea; parents: Margie and David Kapu Koani of Honolulu; two sisters: Jaquelina Leanio of Anahola and Sherry Anderson of Ocean View, Big Island; four brothers: Clayton Tremaine of Kona, Big Island, Grant Veddar, Douglas Tremaine of Texas and Gordon Tremaine of Red Hill, O‘ahu; eight step children: Victoria (Amos) Tamura of Honolulu, Clayton (Marian) Delos Santos of Maui, Brenda (Eddie) Viernes of Honolulu, Karen Delos Santos of Honolulu, Nadine (Jaime) Ito of Maui, Rochelle (Jeff) Stark of Kaua‘i, Roxanne (Keokipalau) Gonsalves of Kaua‘i and Edward Kanda of Honolulu; four grandchildren ; 16 step grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends may call on Friday, Aug. 6, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday, Aug. 7, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. where services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Robert P. “Bobby” Toki
Robert P. “Bobby” Toki of Kapa‘a died at his home on July 28, 2004, at the age of 59.
Born in Waialua, O‘ahu, on Sept. 11, 1944, he is survived by two sons, Barry Lee Toki of Honolulu, and Jayson Toki of Kapa‘a; one daughter: Jaydene Toki of Hilo; one granddaughter Sache Goode of Tacoma, Wash., He is also survived by his father: Frank Mamalias; four brothers: Howard M. (Adeline) Toki Jr. of Las Vegas, Gerald (Vicky) Toki of Glendale, Ariz., Ronald (Diana) Toki of Wailua, and Franklyn (Debra) Mamalias of Wailuku, Maui; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Aug. 7, with visitation to be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., service to begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Waika‘ea Canal (Lihi) in Kapa‘a. Scattering of his ashes will follow the service.

James Y. Morita
James Y. Morita of Kapa‘a, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on July 27, 2004, at the age of 88.
Born in Lihu‘e, on July 23, 1916, he was a liquor inspector with the County of Kaua‘i.
He is survived by his wife, Mitsuyo of Kapa‘a; three sons, Wendell (Tomoko) Morita of Bueno Park, Calif., Richard Morita of Kapa‘a and Wesley Morita of Kapa‘a; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, George (Rose) Morita of Kapa‘a; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Services were private. Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Josephine Kaohuokalani Kelley
Josephine Kaohuokalani Kelley of Pu‘uwai, Ni‘ihau, died at Queen’s Medical Center on July 27, 2004, at the age of 55.
Born in Pu‘uwai, Ni‘ihau on Sept. 23, 1948, she is survived by son, Donald H. Kanahele of Kekaha, two daughters, Diane Kanahele of Kekaha and Colleen Niau of Ni‘ihau; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Annie K. Kanahele of Kekaha; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, at the Waimea Hawaiian Church; service from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aloha attire is suggested.

Mary Louis
Mary Louis of Kapa‘a, died July 30, 2004, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 79.
Born Jan. 19, 1925, in Hawai‘i, she was a nurse.
She is survived by two sons: Abel (Jessica) Louis, Jr. of Lihu‘e and Roland (Susan) Louis of Waipahu; three daughters: Laverne (Jaime) Villon, Sr. of Lihu‘e, Carol (Gary) Palmeira of Hanama‘ulu and Sheila (Tony) Belarmino of Hanama‘ulu; one sister: Patricia Efhan Nakamura of Texas; five brothers: Maximo Efhan of Wailua, Inocencio (Mercy) Efhan of Wailua, Vicente (Helga) Efhan of Wailua, Gary Efhan of California and John (Delores) Efhan of California; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be Saturday, Aug. 7, at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa‘a with viewing from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and Mass to be celebrated at 11 a.m. by Father Jim.
Burial to follow at Lihu‘e Cemetery.

Kenneth Ronning Jr.
Kenneth Lawrence Ronning, Jr., of Fairfax, California and Hanalei, passed away while surfing at San Onofre on Tuesday, July 27, 2004.
Born on November 8, 1948 in Alhambra, Calif., and growing up in San Marino, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Marie (Annareno) Ronning.
He was a General Building Contractor who lived and worked in California and Hawai‘i.
He moved to the islands in the late 60s to surf the North Shore of O‘ahu. After traveling awhile, he and family relocated to Kaua‘i in 1980. Later, moving between Fairfax and Hanalei, when on Kaua‘i he loved to spend time surfing with his family and friends at the Hanalei Pier.
Always smiling and with a kind word for everyone, Ken was loved by many and will be missed by all.
He is survived by his wife Susan and son Eric, of Fairfax, California; a daughter, Mele Ronning Mahuiki and her husband, Ezera, of Hanalei; a sister, Patricia Jewell and her husband Pete, of Arcadia, Calif., sister Kay Mullin of Carpenteria, Calif., grandchildren Mokihana Mahuiki and Ekela Kai Mahuiki of Hanalei, and several nieces and nephews.
A gathering of friends and family will be held at the Hanalei Pier at the convenience of the family.
