KALAPAKI — Man it was a hot one, and I’m not necessarily talking about the weather at Kalapaki Beach yesterday for the Kaua‘i Jr. Lifeguard Championships, instead the action was even hotter, as the Hanalei jr. lifeguards survived a tough challenge from their Salt Pond counterparts to take home first-place team honors. 32 of the top performers will now head over to Ala Moana Beach Park on O‘ahu for the Hawai‘i State Junior Lifeguard Championships on August 7. “This event went really well and has grown throughout the years, plus we’ve got a great group of dedicated kids this year,” Kalani Vierra, Co-supervisor of the Ocean Safety Bureau of the Kaua‘i Fire Department said. Jackie Brady from the girls 15-17 division was a big winner and had a hard time keeping her head up with five medals around her neck. Although winning was on everyone’s mind at the event, the main focus was to learn the importance of becoming safe at the oceans. “I’m basically doing it to stay in shape and it allows me to be of help with my friends at the beach,” junior lifeguard Dustin Foley said. For some, including Foley, the experience might lead them to a job as a lifeguard. “Maybe someday I’ll become a lifeguard,” Foley said. After the event, the group of juniors were treated to some well-deserved pizza, medals, and awards.
