Young Brothers Community Advisory Board gave the Kekaha Pop Warner Association a boost in their efforts at keeping the Kekaha tackle football student athletes motivated in academic excellence.
A $1,000 grant was presented to association president Kurt Toma on Thursday which will be used for the the association’s scholastic awards program as well as help with their annual drug awareness clinic which starts shortly after the season gets underway this Fall.
Kekaha Pop Warner Association services about a hundred participants between the ages of 5 to 15 years old from Mana through Makaweli.
One of the primary goals of the Pop Warner Little Scholars program, a national program of which Kekaha affiliates with, is to keep all of the participants academically motivated.
This means that each participant must maintain good academic standings in school while participating in the program. It also encourages the individuals to develop into well-rounded citizens even after they leave the program.
Another primary function of the national program is to educate each participant, administrator, coach, and parent on drug and alcohol awareness.
This is carried out through the association’s annual clinics.
Toma said the funds will be utilized to provide continuous training in drug and alcohol abuse, scholastic and sportsmanship achievement awards, as well as serve as an out-reach program for the community.
