Kapa‘a’s Morita claims fifth-place
Layne Morita of Kapa‘a carded the fifth best score in the 15-18 boys division at a HSJGA Junior Tour Series Tournament in Honolulu yesterday. Sean Ogawa and Kellen Watabu, also Kapa‘a residents picked up 7th and 11th place, respectively. In the boys 13-14 division, Kapa‘a’s Cyrus Ogawa finished in 6th place.
Earnhardt Jr. hits track again
CONCORD, N.H. — Less than a week after being burned on his face and legs, Dale Earnhardt Jr. gets back on the track to race again, this time at New Hampshire International Speedway. The reason is simple: “Driving race cars is what I love doing,” he said.
Baab, Kua, place at nationals
Lihu‘e’s Alan Baab and T.J. Kua placed in the 2004 Callaway Golf Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego recently.
Baab finished in 10th place in the boys 15-17 division with a six-over-par. Kua placed 27th with a seven-over-par in the boys 13-14 division.
The Junior World Golf Championships has a field size of over 1,000 golfers from various countries and states. Some of the past champions include Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Amy Alcott, Dorothy Delasin, and Brandie Burton.
Calling all north and west shore soccer players
The upcoming soccer season starts August 1 and AYSO is still accepting registrations for many ages on the East and North sides. AYSO is for players ages 4 – 19.
AYSO is looking for coaches in Kapa‘a, Wailua, Kilauea and Hanalei to coach many levels of soccer: Parents, Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, and even older siblings, who care about and enjoy working with kids or teens are encouraged to come out. AYSO will train and all that’s required is some of your time and enthusiasm. They need coaches in order for many of these kids to play. All coaches must be at least 18 years of age. New this year is teams for 4 year olds, who turn 4 by 7/31/04. Call the AYSO hotline for information on where to sign up, 823-9018.
Wie named honorary chairperson
HONOLULU — The two loves of Michelle Wie’s life are coming together with one event.
The 14-year-old golf phenom has been appointed the 11th Annual Marriott Links to Literacy: A Benefit for the Hawaii Library Foundation’s honorary chairperson. “I’m honored and excited to be a part of this great event,” Wie said. “It’ll be my first time to be a chairperson for any event.”
“I’ve been playing in this tournament since I was 10, and I’ve always believed in this cause. I love to read and I love to golf, so I’m very happy to be able to combine the two and help promote literacy in Hawaii,” Wie added.”We’re so thrilled to have Michelle as our honorary chairperson,” said Alan Y. Yamamoto.
