NAWILIWILI — Kalewa, the 46′ catamaran recently built and launched by Kevin Millett, swept the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Kaua‘i Channel Race 2004 winning first in overall elapsed time (6:20:16), first in overall corrected time and first in the Multihull Division.
NAWILIWILI — Kalewa, the 46′ catamaran recently built and launched by Kevin Millett, swept the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Kaua‘i Channel Race 2004 winning first in overall elapsed time (6:20:16), first in overall corrected time and first in the Multihull Division. This was the first year for the 78 mile race from Ko Olina, O‘ahu to Nawiliwili, Kaua‘i which was co-sponsored by Ko Olina Marina. The Nawiliwili Yacht Club has sponsored 13 previous channel races which started from the Ala Wai rather than Ko Olina. Four monohulls set sail Friday at midnight followed by three multihulls that departed at 7 a.m. Saturday morning. The NE winds were steady ranging from 20 to 25 knots. The results for the monohulls are as follows (time is the corrected time based on the boat’s rating): 1. Speedy 8:40:44, 2. Gingerbread Man 8:49:24, 3. Coyote 9:10:21 and 4. Allure 9:41:06. Three multihulls participated with the following results: 1. Kalewa 6:38:34, 2. Meshach 7:18:47 and 3. Malihini 8:26:08. Two boats in the fleet were from O‘ahu, Gingerbread Man from the Kaneohe Yacht Club and Allure from the Waikiki Yacht Club. The Nawiliwili Yacht Club was represented by the other 5 sailing vessels. An exciting awards party took place Saturday evening at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club featuring a full dinner catered by Joe’s On The Green, Kaua‘i brewed beer donated by Keoki Brewing Company and live music by Tongue and Groove Band.
Two beautiful perpetual trophies, as well as hand carved Koa wood platters were presented to Kalewa’s Captain and crew.
