Mamo Cummings said she will remain as president of the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce while she runs as a Republican candidate in the 14 House District race in this year’s election.
That seat is held by incumbent state Rep. Hermina Morita, DNorth Kaua‘i. Morita, a Democrat and incumbent, serves constituents in an election district that includes areas from Wailua Houselots to Ha‘ena.
Cummings said she has discussed with the Board of Directors of the Chamber her decision to run for the elected post, and they are fine with her staying on as president through the election process. If elected, Cummings said she would discuss with the board a modified schedule and remain president.
If elected, she said she will focus her attention on finding immediate and effective solutions to nagging traffic problems in Kapa‘a, which is part of Kawaihau District, the largest population area on Kaua‘i; the island’s pervasive ice (crystal methamphetamine) problem; and helping residents qualify for better-paying jobs.
Cummings has led the Chamber since 1999. Prior to being named to that post, she worked with the Kaua‘i County Office of Economic Development.
While with the county agency, Cummings, among her duties, managed federal grants totaling $5.5 million. She also worked on projects that included the restoration of the Waimea Theatre, and the development of the West Kauai Technology & Visitors Center and the Kaua‘i Resource Center by the Lihu‘e Airport.
Cummings, a third-generation Kauaian, is a Kapa‘a High School graduate and a graduate of Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., where she studied music theory and business administration.
