Acia, Rose, Kia‘aina qualify at Aloha Section PGA/Callaway Golf
Thirteen PGA Club Professionals from the islands teed off in the 36-hole stroke play at Mauna Lani resort on the Big Island at the Aloha Section Callaway Golf PGA Senior Club Professional Championships.
At stake were three spots in the National Senior CPC to be played Oct. 21-24 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Hilo’s Rodney Acia (38-35) broke through a first round tie with Kaua‘i Lagoons’ rich Fite (36-37) and Kalakaua assistant Kerry Greenwood to take the top spot finishing at 144, four strokes better than Dennis Rose of Mauna Lani Resort.
Ron Kia‘aina, Jr. of Ala Wai nailed down the third spot at 148, tying Rose and Fite.
Steven Hookano of Waikoloa Village nailed down fifth at 149.
UH swimming and diving sign eight for 2004-05
The University of Hawai‘i swimming and diving program signed eight for the upcoming season n six swimmers and two divers. Head coaches Mike Anderson and Mike Brown made the announcement Monday.
The six swimmers are Thomas Winker, Kurtis Miller, Grame Tozer, Grzegorz Mroz, Mackensie Downing, and cassandra Hunt.
Rui Wang and Mats Wiktorsson are the two divers joining the UH program, Wang a transfer from Tsing Hua University in Beijing.
Among Wang’s credentials, she was the 10-meter platform diving champion at the 21st World University Games in 2001. She also won gold in the synchronized 10-meter platform at the Diving World Cup in both 1995 and 1997 while garnering a Chinese National Championship.
Wiktorsson, from Switzerland, specializes in the platform, winning silver medals in the platform at the 2004 Sweden Winter Senior Nationals.
The coaching staff is expecting to sign more student athletes in the coming week for the season that opens Oct. 15 with the first senior meet scheduled for the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex starting at 6 p.m.
