Dr. Liela Nitta did a great job coordinating the Pilipa‘a O Kekaha Stew Dinner Friday night in Kekaha.
In addition to honoring five of the kupuna from the Westside, the Kekaha Hawaiian Homestead Association threw a shindig that reeked of traditional flavor – and, the Pat Pereira beef stew was ono! Behind the man is Leah Pereira, whom Dr.
Nitta said is one of the reasons for the program’s success. And, Leah said that it was a family thing with everyone pitching in.
Mina Morita (she was shopping at Pono Market on Saturday) was on O‘ahu, but came homesick to attend, and Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes had to cut short his visit for a reunion (he said every time some one comes from the Mainland they have one).
Daniel Hamada was there, and proud to recognize one of the students from his ‘Ele‘ele School days. So was Tommy Contrades and Don Cataluna. And, no forget their families who were all there – community-style! Speaking of reunions, out on the Tarawa (one of the RIMPAC warships), Lanelle Hawthorne was following the Kaua‘i High School reunion via kauaiworld.com. Actually, she was following the TGI coverage of the RIMPAC exercises, and got homesick because she was so close, but so far.
On Saturday, it was nice to see Ed Fountain who had sister Wanda Moa and mom Joyce out helping with the two new UH football designs that will be exclusive to Kaua‘i. Mark Oyama was getting the royal tour of the Puakea Golf Course, and his Mark’s Place will be the site where you get the new shirt designs (make sure you check his daily specials, too).
