Island School expansion
The gift of over eight acres of land to Island School is a nice gesture by Grove Farm owner Steve Case. Case is honoring long-time Grove Farm executive David Pratt, as well as putting his support behind the private school at Puhi, which is now over a quarter of a century old.
Case says of Island School: “…we believe that expansion of the Island School and the strengthening of education institutions in general are critical to Kaua‘i’s future.”
In saying this the digital communication’s genius who developed America OnLine acknowledges the need for good school’s if Kaua‘i’s economy is to diversify and grow beyond tourism and agriculture.
Programs such as high-tech tie-ins at our public schools are helping to improve the reputation of high school education on Kaua‘i, but a look at the recent Honolulu magazine ratings for Hawai‘i’s schools shows we’ve still got a long way to go at the campuses of our public schools at Waimea, Lihu‘e and Kapa‘a.
While Island School is still below the level of Punahou, Hawaii Prepatory Academy on the Big Island and a handful of other prominent private secondary schools in Hawai‘i, the school has made continual progress over the years.
In the late 1970s the school was launched by a group of women who were determined to start a quality school for their children and other students.
They began in the old red McKee Sugar Company building at Kealia that’s adjacent to today’s Kealia Country Store.
Through determination and a growth in support from the community, and from their now-famous annual auction, the school thrived.
It’s campus at Puhi will be well complimented by the construction of a gymnasium.
The gym will add a new dimension to the local high school sports scene, too, by adding a new and modern venue for basketball, volleyball and other indoor sports.
Island School is also noted in the community for its liberal awarding of scholarships to worthy students who might otherwise not attend the school.
