The Kapa‘a High School boys basketball squad went camping on Maui from June 16-19, but not the kind of camping you’re thinking of. Instead, the boys in green went to a different type of camp, that involved improving their abilities both on and off the court at the 2004 Youth Basketball Camp, presented by long time UH-Hilo basketball coach Jimmy Yagi. Warrior basketball head coach Ed Phillips and his team brought back a lot of good basketball skills from the camp, in addition to outstanding awards, which indcluded the camp’s most outstanding prize, going to junior Mike Lindsey. Also earning awards were Alex LaMadrid for most outstanding efforts for his age group and Kiah Imai, brought back a trophy for most outstanding honors in his age group. Other Warriors attending the camp were Kaylan Dolor, Elijah Phillips, Greg Ragsac, Joe La Madrid, Will Hardy, and Urijah Phillips. Coach Yagi was joined by former UH-Hilo basketball standout, Bill O’Rear, coach Hamilton, UH-Hilo assistant men’s basketball coach Eric Sanchez, and other coaches from all over the state. Clayton Suzuki did another outstanding job as the facilitator of the camp, but most importantly, the parents of all of the campers, which included Kapa‘a parents should be commended for their willingness to put their students through the camp, both financially and emotionally. “Our kids, including myself are very thankful for the great support of their parents; without them this great event wouldn’t have been possible,” coach Phillips said.
