Kaua‘i divers to represent Hawai‘i at Nationals
Barretto, Yangco, Siliado go for the gold
Kaua‘i’s own divers, John Barreto, Allen Yangco, and Reyton Siliado are representing Hawai‘i in the upcoming 2004 National Spearfishing Tournament. This year’s competition is happening on O‘ahu. There is going to be 30+ men’s teams (3 men per team) from across the USA competing for the national title, (This event is compared to the Triple crown of surfing) which brings together the highest caliber of divers.
To be selected as one of the Hawai‘i’s teams, there was a regional elimination which was held earlier this year on O‘ahu. From that tournament, 3 of Kaua‘i’s divers made the top scores to advance to the national tournament.
Babe Ruth boys suffer heartbreaking loss
The Kaua‘i Babe Ruth team couldn’t have fought harder in the state championship game on the Big Island yesterday, but came up just short in a 6-5 loss.
The Kaua‘i team took a 2-1 lead into the seventh and final inning before the Big Island team plated four runs to lead. But, playing as the home team, Kaua‘i rallied in their last licks, tying the game and sending it into extra innings.
The teams went through a scoreless eighth before a double, a stolen base, and a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth provided the Big Island team with the winning run.
Kai Lopez took the tough loss.
“Talk about tension!” said Karen Chaves, president of the Big Island Babe Ruth League. “It was an awesome game.”
